Regional Mexicano

Regional Mexicano, or regional Mexican music, is the umbrella category under which the Spanish-language music industry groups Mexico's regional traditions and their US diaspora offshoots: banda, norteño, mariachi, ranchera, corrido, duranguense, grupero and sierreño. Defined less by a single sound than by shared instrumentation families — brass bands, accordion-led conjuntos, mariachi strings and requinto guitars — and by themes of homeland, migration, work and love, it is one of the largest sectors of Latin music. Its modern stars range from *Vicente Fernández* and *Los Tigres del Norte* to *Banda MS*, *Grupo Firme* and *Peso Pluma*, whose corridos tumbados carried the category to global charts in 2023.
