Revue

Revue

Revue is a theatrical entertainment assembled from loosely connected songs, dances, and topical sketches rather than a unified plot, taking its name from the French practice of reviewing the year's events on stage. Paris codified the form at the #Folies Berg猫re# and in the spectaculars that made stars of *Mistinguett* and *Josephine Baker*, while Broadway's Ziegfeld Follies pursued the same formula with lavish production numbers. Later revues turned retrospective, anthologizing songwriters and choreographers, as in "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Fosse", and the original-cast album became the form's principal recorded legacy.
