Road Rap

Road Rap

A British rap style that emerged from South London in the mid-2000s, in which MCs document street and gang life — the 'road' — over slow, heavy, minor-key production shaped by grime, US gangsta rap and dancehall. Delivered with deliberate pacing, London slang and uninflected realism by artists such as *Giggs*, *Sneakbo*, *Section Boyz* and *67*, road rap proceeded largely outside radio support, building its audience through mixtapes, pirate and internet video channels, and a direct correspondence between the music and the postcodes it describes.
