Romani Music

The music of the Romani people, whose migration from northern India across the Middle East into Europe produced distinct regional idioms united by virtuoso technique, ornamented melody and professional hereditary musicianship. Its documented forms range from the l膬utari string ensembles of Romania and the brass fanfares of the Balkans to flamenco in Spain, the jazz manouche of *Django Reinhardt*, and the wedding-band and 膷o膷ek traditions of Macedonia and Bulgaria represented by *Esma Red啪epova*, *Ko膷ani Orkestar* and *Ivo Papazov*. Romani musicians historically served as the professional music-makers of their host societies.
