Saeta

Saeta is a devotional flamenco *palo* from Andalusia: an unaccompanied, free-meter song of prayer and lament addressed to images of Christ and the Virgin Mary during Holy Week processions. Sung *a palo seco*, typically from a balcony as the *paso* passes below, it unfolds in long melismatic phrases broken by cries of grief, its lines drawn from the Passion and from popular religious poetry. Although rooted in older liturgical and folk chant, the modern saeta was shaped by flamenco singers who gave it the ornament, intensity and pathos of *cante jondo*, making it the most solemn and exposed form in the flamenco repertoire.
