Samba

Samba is a Brazilian musical genre and dance style originating from the convergence of West African rhythmic traditions, particularly from Angola and the Congo, with European harmonic structures in early 20th-century Rio de Janeiro. Its sonic identity is defined by a dense percussive foundation of instruments like the surdo and pandeiro, overlaid with the bright, driving chords of the cavaquinho and the melodies of nylon-string guitars. Fundamentally a communal music, its ethos balances celebratory expression with poignant social commentary. Evolving from marginalized gatherings to a potent symbol of national identity, samba shaped Brazilian culture, most visibly through Carnival, and continues to influence music globally.
