Samba-canção

Samba-canção emerged in Brazil during the late 1920s as a slower, more lyrically focused variant of traditional samba. It shifts the emphasis from carnival-esque percussion to intricate melody and harmonic complexity, often drawing from bolero and American popular song. The genre's sonic texture is characterized by a sentimental and often dramatic mood, featuring arrangements centered on acoustic guitar, piano, and later, full string orchestras. Its ethos is rooted in themes of romantic love, melancholy, and 'saudade' (a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing), establishing a popular music format that directly prefigured the sophisticated harmonies and intimate lyrical style of the subsequent Bossa Nova movement.
