Samba-choro

A Brazilian hybrid that joins samba to choro, blending the syncopated pulse and dance orientation of samba with the intricate counterpoint, chromatic harmony and virtuoso melodic writing of choro. The term covers two related practices: choro ensembles adopting samba rhythms and repertory, and the sung choro-can莽茫o, in which lyrics are fitted to choro melodies for radio and recording singers. Flute, clarinet, cavaquinho, six- and seven-string guitars, bandolim and pandeiro form the characteristic ensemble, supporting rapid ornamented lines, improvised counter-melodies and call-and-response exchanges. Samba-choro is consequently heard as a more elaborate and virtuosic branch of samba, one that prizes instrumental display alongside song.
