Samba-reggae

Samba-reggae

Samba-reggae is the Afro-Bahian carnival rhythm created in Salvador in the mid-1980s by *Neguinho do Samba* for the bloco afro *Olodum*, fusing samba's surdo-driven bateria with reggae's offbeat feel and Caribbean cadences. Played by massed percussion orchestras of surdos, caixas, repiques and timbaus behind call-and-response singing, it slowed the frantic samba de enredo to a heavy, swaying groove and gave Bahia's Black carnival a pan-African musical identity. Carried by *Olodum*, *Timbalada* and singers such as *Margareth Menezes* and *Daniela Mercury*, samba-reggae became the percussive engine of ax茅 music and of Salvador's carnival industry.
