Sample Drill

Sample drill is the New York drill variant built on prominent samples of familiar pop, R&B and soul records, created by the Bronx producer *Cash Cobain* at the start of the 2020s. Where standard drill uses dark, sliding-808 minimalism, sample drill loops a recognizable melody, often a female vocal, over the drill rhythm, softening the sound toward romance and party music; its successor style, sexy drill, pairs this with melodic, flirtatious rapping. Breakthrough productions such as *B-Lovee*'s "My Everything", built on *Mary J. Blige*, and records by *Chow Lee* and *41* made the style New York rap's dominant commercial sound by 2023.
