Santer铆a Music

Santer铆a music is the sacred music of the Afro-Cuban Lucum铆 religion, Regla de Ocha, built on consecrated bat谩 drums, call-and-response chant in Lucum铆, the Yoruba-derived liturgical language, and drum patterns dedicated to specific orishas. Ceremonial cycles such as the toque de santo open with salutes to Elegu谩 and proceed through each deity's songs, played on the hourglass-shaped iy谩, it贸tele and ok贸nkolo. Singers such as *Merceditas Vald茅s* and *L谩zaro Ros* brought the repertoire to record, including the late-1940s "Toques de Santo" sessions, while *Afrocuba de Matanzas* documents the Matanzas tradition.
