Schottische

Schottische

The schottische is a nineteenth-century European couple dance and its music, a slow, stately relation of the polka in 2/4 or 4/4 time, performed with gliding steps, turns and hops. Despite its name, German for 'Scottish', it arose in Bohemia and spread through ballrooms and folk practice across Europe and the Americas, taking local names: schottis in Sweden, reinlender in Norway, chotís in Mexico and, transformed, xote in Brazil. In Texas-Mexican conjunto it became one of the core dance rhythms carried by accordion and bajo sexto.
