Sea Shanty

Sea Shanty

Sea shanties are traditional work songs of the age of sail, sung by merchant and naval crews to coordinate collective labor aboard large sailing vessels. A solo shantyman leads each verse and the crew answers with a chorus timed to specific tasks: halyard shanties for hoisting sails, capstan shanties for weighing anchor, and short-haul shanties for brief, forceful pulls. Melodies are simple, repetitive and built for unison singing by untrained voices, with call-and-response structures that pace physical effort. Repertoires mixed original forecastle material with adapted ballads, minstrel songs and hymns, and were preserved after the steam era by collectors, revival singers and modern folk groups.
