Serbian Folk Music

Serbian folk music (narodna muzika) is the traditional and popular folk repertoire of Serbia, sung in Serbian and built on the kolo circle dance, the asymmetric rhythms of the south and east, and instruments including accordion, frula flute, tamburica and gusle. It divides broadly into izvorna, the older rural singing of regions such as 艩umadija and the Morava valley, and the urban starogradska tradition of kafana songs and romances. In the twentieth century its defining interpreters were *Toma Zdravkovi膰*, whose confessional ballads made him the genre's central figure, *Lepa Luki膰*, and the Romani singer *艩aban Bajramovi膰*.
