Shangaan Electro

Shangaan Electro is a South African dance style created by producer *Nozinja* in the 2000s, which rebuilt the Tsonga (Shangaan) disco and folk musics of Limpopo as fast electronic dance music. Tracks run at tempos approaching 180 beats per minute, with marimba-like synthesizer figures, minimal or absent basslines, call-and-response vocals in Xitsonga and programming derived from kwaito and Tsonga guitar music. Centred on Soweto and Limpopo villages and performed at outdoor functions with costumed dancers, the style reached international audiences through the #Honest Jon's# compilations and *Nozinja*'s album for #Warp Records#.
