Shatta

Shatta

Shatta is the Martinican and Guadeloupean descendant of Jamaican dancehall: a stripped, bass-heavy riddim style built in Fort-de-France studios from the late 2000s, when producer *SK Shatta* began refitting dancehall instrumentals to local taste. Its classic pattern drops the kick drum, leaving deep sub-bass, clipped snares and siren-like synths under MCs chanting in Antillean Creole and French. Carried by *Kalash* and, in the 2020s, by *Maureen*, billed as the voice of shatta, the style moved from island sound systems to French charts and fashion runways.
