Shitgaze emerged from the American underground in the mid-2000s, merging the lo-fi ethos of 90s indie with the abrasive textures of noise rock. The style is defined by its intentional sonic degradation, achieved through cheap recording equipment, cassette tapes, and overwhelming layers of guitar distortion, reverb, and feedback. Vocals and melodies are often rendered nearly unintelligible, buried beneath a corrosive wall of sound. Pioneered by acts like *Times New Viking* and *Psychedelic Horseshit*, the movement championed immediacy and raw texture over fidelity, leaving a legacy that valued the recording process itself as a key expressive tool.
