Singeli

Singeli is a Tanzanian electronic dance music from Dar es Salaam, among the fastest popular styles in the world, with tempos commonly between 180 and 300 beats per minute. Producers working in small neighbourhood studios build tracks from sped-up loops of taarab and other Tanzanian recordings, Zaramo rhythms, cheap keyboards and drum machines, over which MCs rap and chant in rapid Swahili. Born at vigodoro, all-night street parties in the city's working-class districts in the mid-2000s, singeli circulated for a decade through local studios and phone sharing before international labels carried it abroad.
