Ska Punk

Ska Punk

Ska punk is a fusion genre that emerged from the cross-pollination of late 1970s British 2 Tone ska and American hardcore punk. Its sonic texture is defined by the energetic interplay between punk rock's distorted guitars and driving drum beats with ska's characteristic off-beat guitar rhythms, known as the 'skank,' and prominent, often melodic, horn sections. Lyrically, the genre ranges from political commentary to introspective or humorous themes, delivered with a spirited, anti-authoritarian ethos. After gestating in underground scenes during the 1980s, ska punk achieved significant mainstream commercial success in the mid-1990s, shaping the sound of alternative rock for the remainder of the decade.
