Skate Punk

Originating from the Southern California hardcore punk scene of the 1980s, skate punk is a subgenre that fuses the high-velocity tempos and distorted power chords of hardcore with the melodic sensibilities of pop music. The sonic texture is defined by fast, technical drumming, prominent and often complex basslines, and twin guitars that trade palm-muted riffs with melodic leads. Lyrically, the genre's ethos is tied to skate culture, channeling themes of youthful alienation, anti-authoritarianism, and personal politics, frequently with a sarcastic or self-deprecating tone. After gestating in the underground, skate punk achieved significant commercial visibility in the 1990s, shaping the trajectory of mainstream punk rock.
