Sludge metal merges the punishingly slow tempos and down-tuned riffing of doom metal with the raw aggression and vocal intensity of hardcore punk. Originating with the experiments of bands like *Melvins*, who fused the weight of *Black Sabbath* with the nihilism of *Black Flag*, the genre's sonic architecture is defined by thick, abrasive guitar distortion, prominent feedback, and harsh, shouted vocals.
