Son huasteco

Son huasteco, also called huapango huasteco, is the traditional son of Mexico's Huasteca region, spanning parts of Veracruz, San Luis PotosÃ, Hidalgo, Tamaulipas, Querétaro and Puebla. It is played by a trÃo of violin, jarana huasteca and guitarra huapanguera, the two guitars laying down a strummed sesquialtera pulse while the violin improvises dense ornamentation above them. Singers trade improvised coplas in high falsetto, and couples dance zapateado on a wooden platform, the tarima, whose percussion answers the music. Its repertoire of named sones — "El Querreque", "La Malagueña", "El Gusto" — anchors weddings, baptisms and community fiestas across the region.
