Son istmeño

Son istmeño is the traditional son repertory of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca, Mexico: waltz-paced songs in triple metre — "La Sandunga", "La Llorona", "La Petenera", "La Martiniana", "El Feo" — performed by marimba orquestas, brass bandas and the older pito flute and caja drum duos of the region's Zapotec towns. The sones accompany the velas, the all-night saints' festivals of Juchitán, Tehuantepec and San Blas Atempa, and are sung in Isthmus Zapotec and Spanish. It is the emblematic music of the Tehuana culture of the Isthmus.
