Songo

Songo is a Cuban dance genre created in Havana at the end of the 1960s by *Juan Formell* and *Los Van Van*, fusing son cubano and rumba with North American funk, rock and jazz harmony. Its signature is a reinvented rhythm section: drummer *Jos茅 Luis Quintana* "Changuito" redistributed the traditional patterns across drum kit, congas, timbal and hand percussion, while electric bass, keyboards and trombones supplied a new harmonic weight. Songo became the foundation of modern Cuban dance music and the direct parent of timba.
