Sotho-Tswana Folk Music

Sotho-Tswana Folk Music

Sotho-Tswana folk music covers the traditional musics of the Sotho-Tswana peoples of Lesotho, Botswana and South Africa's highveld: the Basotho, Batswana and Bapedi. Its best-known recorded form is *famo*, the accordion-and-drum storytelling music of Basotho migrant workers, but the wider tradition includes concertina dance songs, mohobelo men's dances, praise poetry, choral song in the manner of *Joshua Pulumo Mohapeloa*, and instruments such as the lesiba mouth bow and setolotolo. Sung in Sesotho and Setswana, the repertoire carries news, satire, clan praise and the lived experience of migration to the mines.
