Sound Art

Sound Art

Sound art is an artistic practice in which sound is the primary medium and subject, encompassing sound sculpture, installation, site-specific works for public space and compositions for unconventional playback systems. It developed from the 1960s onward at the intersection of experimental music, Fluxus and gallery art, as figures such as *Max Neuhaus* placed permanent sound installations in urban environments and *Harry Bertoia* built resonant metal sculptures. Practitioners including *Alvin Lucier*, *Christina Kubisch* and *Annea Lockwood* investigate acoustic phenomena, electromagnetic fields and the sonic character of places, presenting listening itself as the work's content rather than a concert event.
