South Asian Music

South Asian music is the umbrella for the musics of the Indian subcontinent, spanning the Hindustani and Carnatic classical systems, both built on raga and tala, the Sufi devotional singing of qawwali, regional folk traditions, and the vast output of the Indian and Pakistani film industries. Its modern canon moves from *Ravi Shankar* and *M.S. Subbulakshmi* to playback singers *Lata Mangeshkar* and *Asha Bhosle*, composers *R.D. Burman* and *A.R. Rahman*, and the British Asian underground of *Talvin Singh* and *Asian Dub Foundation*, in which diaspora producers fused subcontinental sources with jungle, dub, and electronica.
