Space Disco

Space Disco

Space disco is the science-fiction-themed strain of European disco that flourished between 1977 and 1979, fusing disco's four-on-the-floor beat with the synthesizer arpeggios and cosmic imagery popularized by *Star Wars*. Producers in France, Germany and Italy — *Space* with "Magic Fly", *Cerrone* with "Supernature", *Giorgio Moroder*'s Munich machine funk behind it — layered oscillating synthesizers, vocoders, orchestral stabs and sound effects suggesting lasers and starships over orthodox disco rhythm sections. It was among the first fully electronic forms of disco, and a direct ancestor of Italo disco and hi-NRG.
