Spanish Pop

Spanish pop is the mainstream popular music of Spain: Spanish-language, melody-first pop made for national radio, television and the summer festival circuit. Its modern history runs from the ye-yé era and the synth-driven pop of the movida — *Alaska y Dinarama*, *Mecano*, *Radio Futura* — through the stadium balladry of *Alejandro Sanz* and *La Oreja de Van Gogh*, who between them defined the Spanish chart sound of the 1990s and 2000s, to the streaming era of *RosalÃa*. What unifies it is craft: the instantly quotable chorus, polished studio production and the romantic ballad as national form.
