Spanish Rock

Spanish rock is rock music made in Spain and sung predominantly in Spanish, from the beat groups of the 1960s through the heavy rock of *Barón Rojo* and *Leño*, the movida-era pop-rock of *Radio Futura* and *Nacha Pop*, and the stadium and indie generations that followed. Shaped first by censorship under Franco, which squeezed it into covers and ye-yé pop, it acquired a durable identity after 1975: urban poetry in the language of the street, regional scenes from Madrid to Bilbao and Seville, and a canon — *Triana*'s Andalusian progressive rock, *Héroes del Silencio*, *Extremoduro* — distinct from the wider rock en español world.
