Speed Garage

Speed garage is a British dance style that flourished in the mid-to-late 1990s as a harder, faster mutation of American garage house. London and Midlands DJs played US garage imports at increased tempo, and producers such as *Armand Van Helden*, *Double 99* and *187 Lockdown* built tracks around pitched-up, time-stretched vocals, chopped drum edits and deep, warping basslines borrowed from jungle. Its hallmarks are the "warp" bass, gunshot and rewind effects, and an aggressive energy that distinguished it from the smoother UK garage developing alongside it; speed garage hits such as "RipGroove" crossed into the UK charts before the style folded into UK garage and bassline.
