Surf Punk

Surf punk fuses the reverb-heavy lead guitar and beach imagery of 1960s surf rock with the speed, brevity and aggression of punk. It took shape in Southern California around 1980, when bands such as *Agent Orange* — whose "Bloodstains" became a skate-punk standard — and *JFA* played surf riffs and covers at hardcore velocity, in parallel with the surf-inflected guitar lines of *Dead Kennedys*. Later waves added horror, science-fiction and garage elements through *Man or Astro-Man?* and the 1990s surf revival, while modern acts such as *Wavves* and *Death Lens* merge the style with lo-fi indie rock.
