Surf Rock

Surf Rock

Originating from the Southern California surf culture of the late 1950s, Surf Rock is an early subgenre of rock & roll defined by its distinct guitar-centric sound. The sonic texture is characterized by the prominent use of Fender electric guitars processed through spring reverb units to create a signature "wet" sound, emulating the sensation of waves. Compositions are often instrumental, featuring upbeat tempos, clean melodic lines influenced by Middle Eastern and Mexican scales, and techniques like double-picking and whammy bar manipulation. While its commercial dominance was brief, peaking in the early 1960s before the British Invasion, the genre's guitar innovations directly shaped the sonic vocabulary of subsequent garage, punk, and alternative rock movements.
