Swamp Rock

Swamp rock is the late-1960s American style that fuses rock and roll with the blues, country and Louisiana music of the Gulf South. Its records sound humid and murky by design: tremolo and reverb-soaked guitar, deep prominent bass, unhurried grooves and raw, soulful singing, applied to songs about bayous, small towns and Southern Gothic unease. *Creedence Clearwater Revival* — Californians who imagined Louisiana so completely that the illusion stuck — and *Tony Joe White* defined the style between 1968 and the early 1970s, and its atmosphere passed into southern rock and Americana.
