Symphonic Rock

Emanating from late 1960s progressive and psychedelic rock, Symphonic Rock merges the amplified instrumentation of a rock band with the compositional scope, harmonic language, and timbral palette of classical orchestral music. Its sonic signature is defined by this synthesis, utilizing either a full orchestra or, more frequently, keyboard technologies like the Mellotron and Moog synthesizer to evoke orchestral textures. The genre's ethos was one of artistic elevation, favoring elaborate concept albums and extended compositions over shorter pop forms. It achieved a significant commercial peak during the 1970s before its direct influence lessened, though its ambitious approach informed the development of arena rock and progressive metal.
