Tamborera

Tamborera

Tamborera names two related Caribbean dance genres. In Panama, the tamborera created by composer *Ricardo Fábrega* fuses the Afro-Panamanian tamborito and Panamanian cumbia with Cuban son and danzón, adding organ, piano and brass to the folk base; *Silvia De Grasse* became its emblematic singer. In Venezuela's Zulia state, the gaita tamborera emerged around 1970 when *Nelson Martínez* and *Gran Coquivacoa* married the gaita de tambora to the chimbángueles drums of the San Benito festival, producing a faster, percussion-heavy branch of the gaita family played at Christmas season celebrations.
