Tamborzão

Tamborzão is the signature beat of funk carioca in the 2000s, created in Rio de Janeiro's West Zone in 1998 by *DJ Luciano*, who programmed it on a Roland R-8 drum machine over the Miami bass-derived volt mix loop. Built from booming 808-style kicks, syncopated snare hits and a rolling, heavily swung groove at around 130 BPM, the beat gave baile funk a harder and more aggressive identity than the lighter tamborzinho it displaced. It underpinned the era of the big sound-system equipes and the proibidão MCs, in tracks assembled as looping montagens of chants and samples, designed for the baile rather than for radio.
