Tejano Music

Tejano music is the popular music of Mexican-American Texas, formed where Mexican song traditions met European dance rhythms and American country and rock. Its classic sound pairs the diatonic accordion and bajo sexto of conjunto with the keyboards, electric guitars and drum kits of the orquesta tradition, and its repertoire runs from polkas, rancheras and cumbias to Spanish-language ballads and country crossovers. Sung in Spanish and English from the dance halls of South and Central Texas, Tejano became the commercial voice of the Tejano community, reaching a national peak in the 1990s behind *Selena* and *Emilio Navaira*.
