Tishoumaren

Tishoumaren

Tishoumaren, or 'desert blues', emerged from the Tuareg diaspora of the 1970s and 80s, fusing traditional Saharan folk modalities with the electric guitar of Western rock and blues. The sound is defined by hypnotic, looping guitar lines played in pentatonic scales, sparse, driving percussion, and call-and-response vocals expressing the concept of 'assouf'鈥攁 profound sense of nostalgia and melancholy. Initially circulated on cassettes in exile camps, the genre was formalized by groups like *Tinariwen* and later gained global traction through world music festivals and specialized labels, becoming a significant voice of cultural and political identity.
