Tontipop

Tontipop

Tontipop, literally 'dumb pop', was a short-lived wave of Spanish indie pop of the late 1990s, named in playful defiance by the musicians and the independent press around labels such as #Elefant Records#. Its groups combined the melodic inheritance of 1960s pop, bubblegum and the Spanish movida with deliberately frivolous lyrics, bright synthesizers and guitar jangle, treating frivolity itself as an aesthetic position against earnest indie rock. Leading acts included *Los Fresones Rebeldes*, *La Casa Azul* and *Astrud*. Though commercially marginal at the time, tontipop set the template for Spain's subsequent indie-pop boom.
