Toypop

Toypop is pop and experimental music performed substantially on toy instruments: toy pianos, plastic guitars, miniature xylophones, music boxes, toy accordions and children's percussion. The restricted pitch ranges and fragile, tinkling tones of these instruments are not treated as novelty alone; composers and songwriters use them to build deliberately naive, intimate music that recalls childhood while remaining carefully composed. The field runs from *John Cage*'s pioneering toy piano writing through French composer *Pascal Comelade*'s Catalan toy orchestras to Japanese and American bedroom acts such as *Lullatone* and *Twink*, where toy timbres meet song form, minimalism and gentle electronics.
