Trap Soul

Trap soul is the mid-2010s fusion of contemporary R&B singing with trap production, named and popularized by *Bryson Tiller*'s debut album "T R A P S O U L" (2015). Melodic, emotionally direct vocals — sung and half-rapped — float over nocturnal trap beats: rolling hi-hats, deep 808s, sparse piano and atmospheric samples. Where hip hop soul had been assertive, trap soul is confessional and late-night, its subjects failed relationships, desire and regret. *PARTYNEXTDOOR*, *6LACK*, *dvsn* and *Tory Lanez* developed parallel versions within the Toronto and Atlanta scenes.
