Tread

Tread

Tread is a style of trap music developed in Philadelphia in the mid-2010s by the producer collective *Working on Dying*, named — according to collaborator *Bootychaaain* — for the treadmill-like sensation of its unusually fast tempos. Tread beats run at roughly 160 to 190 BPM, far above trap's norm, combining busy, mechanical drum programming, hard 808s and cold, futuristic synthesizer figures influenced by European electronic music. Rappers from Philadelphia's underground and the *Goth Money Records* circle, including *Black Kray*, *Five Finger Posse* and *Chxpo*, adopted the sound, which spread through SoundCloud and later fed its producers into mainstream rap sessions.
