Tropicália

Tropicália was a Brazilian artistic movement of 1967 and 1968 whose musical wing fused bossa nova, samba and Afro-Brazilian folk traditions with Anglo-American psychedelic rock, pop and avant-garde composition. Its musicians, *Caetano Veloso*, *Gilberto Gil*, *Gal Costa*, *Os Mutantes* and *Tom Zé*, combined electric guitars and orchestral arrangements with berimbau, accordion and regional song forms, treating Brazil's musical past and its consumer present as raw material for deliberate cultural collision. Staged as a provocation under the military dictatorship, tropicália permanently reshaped Brazilian popular music before its leaders were imprisoned and exiled.
