Tropipop

Tropipop is a Colombian pop genre that fuses the country's Caribbean folk traditions — above all vallenato and cumbia, with their accordion, caja and guacharaca — with international pop, rock and funk production. It was created by *Carlos Vives* and his band La Provincia on "Clásicos de la Provincia" (1993), which recast traditional vallenato with electric guitars and drums, and consolidated on "La Tierra del Olvido" (1995). A 2000s generation — *Fonseca*, *Andrés Cabas*, *Bacilos*, *Gusi* and *Mauricio & Palo de Agua* — streamlined the formula into romantic, radio-ready songs that made tropipop Colombia's dominant pop export of the decade.
