Tsonga Disco

Tsonga Disco

Tsonga disco is the dance music that carried South Africa's Tsonga-speaking northeast into the synthesizer age: brisk disco and bubblegum rhythms programmed on drum machines and keyboards, electric guitar figures, a male lead singer answered by female backing vocalists, and lyrics sung in Xitsonga. It crystallised in 1985 around *Paul Ndlovu*, whose gold single "Khombora Mina" made him the style's first king, and was consolidated by *Thomas Chauke*, *Peta Teanet* and *Penny Penny*, whose "Shaka Bundu" (1994) sold across South Africa. Rooted in Tsonga neo-traditional music yet built from disco's tools, it turned a marginalised language into national pop.
