Turbo-Folk

Turbo-Folk

Turbo-folk is the Serbian popular music that crystallised in the late 1980s and 1990s, accelerating Balkan folk melodies and Roma brass and accordion idioms with drum machines, synthesizers and dance-pop production. Sung in Serbian by star vocalists such as *Ceca*, *Dragana Mirković* and *Aca Lukas*, its songs treat love, wealth, nightlife and national pride over pounding beats and virtuosic folk ornamentation. Denounced by critics as the soundtrack of the Milošević era and embraced by a mass audience, it became the dominant commercial sound of Serbia and its diaspora.
