Turkic-Mongolic Music

Turkic-Mongolic Music

Turkic-Mongolic music names the related traditional musics of the Turkic and Mongolic peoples across the Eurasian steppe, from Tuva and Mongolia to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Xinjiang. Its signatures are the throat-singing techniques of khoomei, in which one voice produces a drone and a whistled overtone melody at once; the horsehead fiddle morin khuur and the long-necked lutes tovshuur, dombra and komuz; and the epic and praise-song repertories of nomadic herders. Shamanic and Buddhist layers, horse culture and the open steppe shape a sound world of drones, galloping rhythms and extraordinary vocal virtuosity now recognised worldwide.
