Udigrudi

Udigrudi was a countercultural music movement that flourished in Recife, in Brazil's Pernambuco state, in the first half of the 1970s, its name a slang deformation of "underground". Centred on singer, painter and label founder *Lula Côrtes*, the scene fused Anglo-American psychedelic rock and acid folk with the folk traditions of the Brazilian Northeast — maracatu rhythms, forró, cantoria singing and regional instruments — in loose, communal recordings marked by improvisation, mysticism and esoteric symbolism. Released on small local labels in tiny pressings under a military dictatorship, its records became some of the most sought-after artifacts of Brazilian music.
