UK Funky

UK funky is a British club genre that emerged in London in the mid-to-late 2000s, fusing the swung drums and bass weight of UK garage and grime with US funky and tribal house, soca, afrobeat and broken beat. Its tracks run around 128–132 BPM, built from syncopated percussion, bongo and conga loops, organ or marimba-like basslines, bright synthesizer stabs and, frequently, R&B-style vocals or MC chants tied to specific dances, as heard in the anthems of *Crazy Cousinz*. More melodic and carnival-minded than dubstep, its contemporary on the hardcore continuum, UK funky favours groove, call-and-response hooks and communal skanking over aggression.
